Kindred Spirits
Last night we wandered down to the Gleneagles bar, which is owned my Tony... Tony who was a good friend to Anadi's Grandparents when they lived here fifty years ago...
As I wrote in a previous blog, Tony remembers the 'announcement ' of Anadi's birth, and the delight of Diane at the news that her first grandchild had arrived in this world...
We sat chatting with him, Anadi getting to know him as an adult - and he told us about his four dogs, his true companions in life, about how special they were, and how he gradually lost them all five years ago...
Two died to cancer, one was run over and another was poisoned... He says he wouldn't have another one now, because his legs are not so good, and they need a lot of exercise; he spoke of his heartbreak at his losses...
And then he listened as we told him about our lifestyle 'it is good to be free', he nodded 'no headaches...' And then he spoke to us of the island, places for us to go and see, and be and explore, but he warned us of the dangers too, the quarries we might fall down, the currents off Comino where the sea has claimed two lives this year...
'Be careful' he cautioned, 'You have this life, and once it is gone, it is gone'.
We liked sitting on the bar stool next to him, he is a kind man, with a brown smiley face and eyes that meet with yours and listen when speaking...
We finished our drinks, which when we came to pay, Tony reminded us were a gift from Anne and David.
Anne was the lady who sat opposite us on the ferry when we sailed from Malta to here. She had told us then, that she and her husband David were selling up, leaving their cottage in the Lake District in the UK, and going to live on a canal boat...
We bumped into them often in the three days they were here. Truly lovely people who we could easily have spent more time with...
If you are reading this David and Anne, thank you!
Thank you for our drink at Gleneagles... Thank you whether you are reading this or not :)
We walked around to 'Sammy's', which is the restaurant run by Sam, Tonys brother... We have become regulars!
We ordered the delicious Asparagus soup, and two G and T's - I had the G in mine this time, as Anadi reckoned it would be good for my sore foot!
Beside us a trio were finishing their meal...
'The asparagus soup is awesome...' One of them volunteered...
We started to chat some more, and discovered them to be Karen, over from Washington as a 'stowaway' on the 70 foot boat captained my her son Willy with Pandora, his girlfriend, as his captain's mate...
They look after and sail the boat for its owner 'and the owners Girlfriend' Karen said...
They had just sailed in from Sicily and were enjoying Gozo a lot...
'Are you gypsies?' Willy asked... 'Are we gypsies?' I responded 'I suppose in a way, we are...'
We swapped life stories at travellers with 'no fixed abode'; by sea and land...
As we journey we meet kindred spirits wherever we go....
